Come On Up, the Weather is Fine. Warm Winter Weather in Lake Arrowhead!

Come on up, the weather is fine!  I'm serious. This is one of the warmest winters (so far) that I've experienced since moving to LAKE ARROWHEAD in 1991. It's sweater weather at a gentle 63 degrees.
One nice thing about warmer weather in the winter is that it brings people up to our area, which helps our local businesses. For instance, The Village in Lake Arrowhead. I was there this morning and, for a quite Friday, it was busy. Our community survives on tourism.
So, come up on, come on out and enjoy this perfect mountain weather.

Lake Arrowhead Fall Day With Snow in The Future

Lake Arrrowhead is beautiful today! Fall temps heading up to the mid 60's. BUT, look out, it'll be dipping within the next few days.  Forecaster are even talking snow.

So, on that note, check out my recent post on winterizing your Lake Arrowhead home. Enjoy.

know. I know. We're quite a few days away from winter. BUT it's never to early to be prepared when youwinter in the mountains live in the mountains since Mother Nature can change her weather-mind in a spilt second. If mountain folks don't prepare, they may face some expensive problems (like broken pipes, for one) later on.
Below are a few tips to get your Lake Arrowhead (mountain) home"prepared" for "Old Man Winter."

Fireplace: It's a perfect time, if you haven't already, to call a Chimney Sweep. He/she can make sure your fireplace is not only clean, but safe.

Roof: Is your roof ready for rain and snow? A good check-up may be in order.

Landscaping: Sprinklers (irrigation systems) should be turned off and hoses drained.

Pipes! Make sure exposed pipes are "wrapped." These problems can be soooo expensive IF they freeze and burst.

Weekend cabin/home: If you're a part-timer, make sure you drain your pipes before heading home, and turn off the water. A SHUT OFF VALVE is an awesome item to have installed.

Doors and Windows: Weather-stripping and caulking should be your best friend!

Gutters: Clean them of leaves and pine-needles.

Power Outages: In case the power goes out (and it can!): Make sure you have plenty of candles, extra flashlights, loads of batteries & a lantern or two and matches. Generators are always helpful.

Snow Equipment: Place your snow shovels in an easy-to-get-to spot. If you have a snow blower, it's a great time to take it for a "check up."

Food and Drinking Water: Bottled water and can(non-perishable) goods should be on hand (3-4 days...just in case)

LAKE ARROWHEAD WEATHER AND UPDATES

When you live in the mountains, you accept the fact that weather is quite different from our "flat lander" friends' weather below (Flat-lander is a GOOD term, really). Generally, our summer days are cooler, as much as 20 degrees cooler, when temps below are scorching hot. Oh, we do get hot up here, once in while. But in the fall and winter months, our temps may ALSO be cooler/colder! We have four, beautiful seasons, and we respect and love each and every one.
Respect, in that, weather can actually change quickly here: from a cool, clear, crisp fall day...to drizzly, rainy, foggy or snowy. So, it's always a good idea to double check weather reports before heading up the mountain. You MAY be experiencing sunny skies down the mountain and think, "Oh, it can't be that bad up there..." But, in fact, it can be very "different."
Here are some sites/links that will make your search fast and, I hope, helpful... before you head out the door for your trek up the mountain.

HELPFUL LINKS TO MAKE YOUR MOVE TO LAKE ARROWHEAD EASIER.

When you're thinking about moving into a "new" community, you want to soak up as much information about the area as possible. Most of us do our research on-line--fast and easy and it saves tons of time and, I think, money. Money on phone calls and certainly money on gas. I have complied some links below that I hope you'll find useful.

  • RIM OF THE WORLD SCHOOL DISTRICT is the reason my family moved to Lake Arrowhead. For a "report card" on each school click on THE RIM OF THE WORLD SCHOOL DISTRICT REPORT CARDS.

  • LAKE ARROWHEAD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE is chalked full of info: Calendar of Events, Visitors Center and lodging, and much, much more.

  • RIM OF THE WORLD.NET was a site started by a young man and includes, up-to-date traffic reports, accidents and fire reports, among a few things. When our mountain suffered the devastating fires, I kept a watchful eye on this site. You can even join the chat room.

  • For the outdoorsy types, a peek at US FOREST DEPARTMENT--SAN BERNARDINO MTS. will show you where the hiking trails, campgrounds and picnic areas are, and loads more.

  • Lake Arrowhead (San Bernardino Mountains) has some beautiful weather. In fact, we have four seasons; one being winter. It's always a good idea to CHECK THE WEATHER for snow reports before heading up. Even in the summer we get some awesome thunder storms.

  • STATER BROS is our local Lake Arrowhead Grocery Store. This link gives you access to that one and other nearby down-the-mountain Stater Bros. (But why would you leave the Mt's?) This store has a bakery, deli, and full meat counter.

  • LAKE ARROWHEAD CHURCHES list local churches and directions to those.

  • THE MOUNTAIN NEWS is our local newspaper for those of US who have to have a paper in hand with their morning cup of java. The paper comes out once a week, on Thursday.

  • THE BLUE JAY VILLAGE & THE LAKE ARROWHEAD VILLAGE are both great places to shop for clothing, shoes, books, music, jewelry and FOOD (restaurants!!!).

  • Lake Arrowhead is a private lake, so you'll want to know what that entails and if that is important to you. To learn about lake rights verses non lake rights and rules and regulations, check out ARROWHEAD LAKE ASSOCIATION & ARROWHEAD WOODS ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE. Keep in mind that there are TONS of areas that are outside of lake rights that are just as wonderful and beautiful. There is something--homes, cabins and castles--for everyone in Lake Arrowhead....
